Monday, July 31, 2000 Rangers add Renney as director of player personnelTom Renney has been hired by the New York Rangers as their new director of player personnel Monday. "Tom has an extensive background and proven track record with regards to evaluating and developing talent," Rangers president Glen Sather said. Renney was head coach of Canada's National Men's team this past season, and coached Team Canada to a fourth place position at the 2000 World Hockey Championship in Russia. "We wish Tom all the best with his new position," said CHA President Bob Nicholson. "Over the past two years, Tom has been an integral part of the CHA, from the continued success of our National Teams, to the Open Ice Summit and all the projects that it generated at a grass roots level." As the CHA's Vice-president of Hockey operations, Renney was responsible for managing the activities of the association's development programs, providing direction and supervision of educational programs for coaches, officials, trainers, players and parents involved in the game. His responsibilities also included the High Performance male and female player development programs at the international, national and regional levels. Prior to joining the CHA in 1998, Renney spent a year and a half as head coach of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks. He joined the Canucks after two seasons as head coach of Canada's National Men's Team, where he guided Canada to a silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics. Renney was assistant coach as Canada won gold at the 1994 World Hockey Championship and bronze in 1995. Renney, a native of Cranbrook, BC, was Canada's 1999 National Junior Team head coach that won a silver medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship. "I certainly have mixed emotions today as a result of my longstanding relationship with the CHA," said Renney. "The Rangers offered me a tremendous opportunity in the management side of the game and I am looking forward to working with this organization."
