Wednesday, 2 September, 1998 Predators sign Brunette and YachmenevThe two former Ontario junior stars, who have alternated between the NHL and the minors the last three years, agreed to contract terms with the NHL expansion team Wednesday. Brunette, 24, a left winger, was selected by Nashville from Washington in the June expansion draft. In 28 NHL games last season, Brunette had 11 goals and 12 assists. In 43 games with Washington's AHL farm club at Portland, Me., he led the Pirates in scoring with 21 goals and 46 assists. Brunette had a 62-goal OHL season with the Owen Sound Platers five years ago. The six-foot-two forward was Washington's sixth pick, 174th overall, in the 1993 entry draft. Terms were not disclosed. Brunette was under contract to the Capitals last season for $350,000 US. Yachmenev, 23, a right winger, was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings for future considerations on July 7. The five-foot-nine Russian played in the IHL at Long Beach, Calif., last season, scoring 23 goals and assisting on 28. He played the two previous seasons with the Kings after starring in the OHL at North Bay, where he had a 61-goal season four years ago. He was the Kings' third choice, 59th overall, in the 1994 draft. Yachmenev agreed to a two-way deal with Nashville. He'll get $425,000 US this season if he plays in the NHL, but less if he's assigned to the minors. "He's really excited about going down there," said his agent, Vlad Shushkovsky of Calgary. "He played pretty well with L.A. his first year, and he's hoping to repeat that success with the Predators." In Ottawa, the Senators announced the signing of six-foot-four goaltender Frederic Cassivi to a one-year deal. The native of Sorel, Que., 23, played for the AHL's Worcester IceCats last season, posting a 20-22-2 record in 45 games. He was Ottawa's seventh pick, 210th overall, in 1994. In Phoenix, the Coyotes announced the signing of free-agent defenceman Brad Tiley to a one-year contract. The Markdale, Ont., native, 27, played for the AHL's Springfield Falcons last winter.
