Agent: White close to deal with Devils

By GORDIE SUTHERLAND -- Halifax Chronicle-Herald

It doesn't appear as though New Glasgow's Colin White will have to wait long for a new contract with the New Jersey Devils.

White's agent, Don Horne, is optimistic the two sides will have a deal done in the next week.

"I think we're close to a three-year deal," said Horne, who returned from New Jersey late Wednesday night.

"It's in its latter stages. I think we're essentially done. There are a few items left to be worked out."

New Jersey originally drafted the hulking six-foot-three and 215-pound defenceman in the second round (49th overall) and his first contract expired at the end of June.

The 22-year-old spent two-and-a-half seasons developing with the Albany River Rats of the AHL before getting the call for the second half of this past NHL season.

White impressed in the playoffs, establishing himself as a physical force while picking up six points. He saw a regular shift as New Jersey captured the Stanley Cup, which he brought back to New Glasgow earlier this month on what the town declared Colin White Day.

Horne, who didn't disclose the financial terms being discussed, is negotiating with New Jersey GM Lou Lamoriello, who also handled White's first contract.

"They are very positive about what Colin has done over the last three years and they're very favourable about Colin's ability to become a premiere defenceman in the league," Horne said.

While Horne has been working on White's contract, the promising young rearguard is focusing on his wedding. On Saturday, he will marry Amy MacDonald of Stellarton.
