    Cat call angers Sens

Team disappointed with suspensions to Panthers

By BRUCE GARRIOCH -- Ottawa Sun

WASHINGTON -- The NHL came down on the Florida Panthers yesterday, but the Senators would like to have seen VP Colin Campbell scratch a little harder.

While Campbell handed Florida defenceman Bret Hedican a three-game suspension and tough guy Chris Wells four games for their actions Saturday in Ottawa, the Senators weren't satisfied.

Choosing their words carefully, because you can be fined for criticizing league matters, the Senators were of the belief Hedican should have received more for the slash that broke defenceman Sami Salo's hand.

"Our guy is going to be out 8-10 weeks and Hedican is only going to miss three games ... amazing," said veteran Kevin Dineen, who received a one-game suspension for elbowing Florida's Cam Stewart in the face.

While Florida GM Bryan Murray claimed he was "surprised" Hedican and Wells were suspended, Campbell was forced to take some kind of action.

n Video evidence clearly shows Hedican slashing Salo across the hand as he went in on a breakaway on Florida goalie Sean Burke. Hedican maintained he didn't do it on purpose.

It should be noted Hedican told Miami reporters that he felt "physically ill" when he learned that Salo had broken his hand and sent an apology to the Ottawa defenceman through teammate Lance Pitlick -- a former Senator.

n Wells was punished for jumping Dineen from behind in the third period. Trying to get retribution for the hit on Stewart, Wells admitted to losing his head and received a five-minute major for intent to injure.

"I thought everything was over with once Scott Mellanby fought Dineen. I thought the score had been settled there and we would just move on with the game," said Panthers coach Terry Murray. "But when they made it 3-0, the focus was back on Kevin Dineen again because we were out of the game."
