Thursday, November 4, 1999 Senators confirm Monday deadline
WASHINGTON - The clock is ticking on Alexei Yashin. Senators president Roy Mlakar yesterday confirmed a Sun report that the club has given its holdout all-star centre until Monday to honour his contract or he'll be suspended for the rest of the season. The Senators faxed a letter to Yashin in Switzerland --where he is working out with the Kloten Flyers -- his agent Mark Gandler, and the NHL Players' Association last week informing them of the deadline. "I'm not going to make any other comments," said Mlakar. "We'll see what happens after that." Yashin is expected to ignore the deadline and will remain in Switzerland. It's believed NHLPA officials will argue the league has no mandate to set a deadline, which would put the issue in front of an independent arbitrator. The Senators have had calls about Yashin's availability, but have rebuffed all inquiries. Yashin will celebrate his 26th birthday in Switzerland tomorrow with his parents, Valery and Tatiana, along with Gandler and girlfriend/actress Carol Alt.
