Thursday, October 14, 1999 Report: Sens to go up for saleOTTAWA (CP) -- Ottawa Senators owner Rod Bryden must have an assurance of federal-provincial assistance by early December or he will announce the hockey club is up for sale, the Ottawa Citizen reports.Bryden has told close associates the deadline will coincide with the National Hockey League governors' meeting in Boca Raton, Fla., scheduled to discuss the 2000-2001 season. If no significant tax relief is forthcoming, he will inform the governors at their Dec. 7-8 meetings of his intent to sell the team and move it to the U.S. Bryden could publicly confirm his deadline as early as next week. He plans to speak Monday at a meeting of the National Hockey League Fans' Association in Ottawa about keeping small-market franchises in Canada. News of Bryden's intention emerged Wednesday after the Ontario government dealt a potentially crippling blow to the campaign to rescue NHL hockey in Canada. The province rejected both a new hockey lottery and any break on the provincial amusement tax. "There will be no new NHL lottery," Premier Mike Harris told reporters Wednesday. "There will be no new lotteries." Federal Industry Minister John Manley said Wednesday because of Ontario's refusal, financial aid for Canadian-based NHL teams "doesn't appear very hopeful."
