Tuesday, October 19, 1999 Even-strength woesMartin concerned about Senators' five-on-five performance
"We've just got to work on being better five-on-five," said Martin yesterday after returning to Ottawa from the team's recent road trip. The Sens allowed only one power-play goal and scored one shorthanded marker during its travels to Phoenix and Denver last week, but the coach wasn't satisfied with the performance when the teams were playing with five skaters. In Denver Saturday night, the Senators were outhustled as the Avalanche scored four times during five-on-five situations during a 4-1 victory. "No doubt (I'm) disappointed to go on the road and not come back with any points," said Martin, whose team will try to break a three-game winless skid Thursday at the Corel Centre against the Avalanche. Ottawa began the season with three straight victories and a tie against the New Jersey Devils , but dropped the two games on the road last week. Ottawa centre Bruce Gardiner will be out of the lineup Thursday with an injured knee, and left winger Magnus Arvedsson's status is questionable with an injured groin. Gardiner sprained ligaments in his left knee late during Thursday's 4-3 loss to Phoenix and missed Saturday's game in Denver. "I don't want to get into a situation where I might come back too early and do more damage," said Gardiner. "I'm going to take care of it while I can." Gardiner wears a brace on the knee, and he said the injury might have been worse had he not been wearing it in Phoenix. Martin said there were no immediate plans to promote a player from the team's IHL affiliate in Grand Rapids, Mich. because of the injuries.
