McEachern out to prove he can play without Yashin

KANATA, Ont. (CP) -- Where will Shawn McEachern be without his former linemate Alexei Yashin?
The left-winger will begin to answer that question tonight when the Ottawa Senators open the regular season at home against the Philadelphia Flyers.
After two years of playing on Yashin's left side, McEachern, the team's second-leading scorer last year, will have two new linemates: centre Vaclav Prospal and right-winger Daniel Alfredsson.
Last year, for the first time in his career, the 30-year-old McEachern cracked the 30-goal barrier, scoring 31. Yashin, his centre, had 94 points. But McEachern isn't worried.
"Every year is different, and I don't enter this year thinking that I'm not going to be playing with Yash," McEachern told the Ottawa Citizen.
"I'm thinking that I'm going to be playing with Alfie and Vinnie and that they're both good players. If we work hard, we're going to make things happen."
McEachern has a selfish reason to be motivated this year. He's in the last year of a two-year contract that will pay him $1.3 million US this year, and next summer he'll be an unrestricted free agent.
