    Burke back on the ice

PHOENIX, Ariz. (CP) -- Phoenix Coyotes goalie Sean Burke practised for the first time on Tuesday and said his surgically repaired thumb has healed well enough for him to accompany the team on its upcoming four-game trip.

Burke, who suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb on Nov. 26, still can't grip his stick tightly and will need at least 10 more days of workouts before he can play.

He will join the team when it travels to Detroit on Jan. 3 to start a four-game trip that includes dates against Ottawa, New Jersey and the New York Islanders. His return game might be the Jan. 8 contest against the Devils.

"Right now, that's the plan," Burke told the Arizona Republic. "I got the cast off and it feels pretty good.

"I've got a little bit of a splint on there that's holding the thumb from overextending. It's a little uncomfortable, but in a couple more days, I think it'll be fine."

Meanwhile, Coyotes left-winger Greg Adams was to undergo nasal surgery Wednesday to repair a deviated septum and clear up a sinus infection. He was expected to miss two to four weeks.
