    OILERS 4, Coyotes 3 (OT)

Oilers hold off Coyotes for OT win

  • Summary

EDMONTON (CP) -- Defenceman Tom Poti scored at 3:07 of overtime as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 4-3 on Saturday night.

Phoenix almost completed an amazing comeback as they scored two goals with the extra attacker in the final minute of the third period to send the game into overtime.

Forward Travis Green scored 36 seconds into the third period then scored his second of the game with only 39 seconds left in the period. Greg Adams tied the game seconds later when he lifted one past Tommy Salo at 19:49.

Ryan Smyth scored two goals for Edmonton, including one on a power play. Bill Guerin also scored for the Oilers, who are a point behind the sixth-place Coyotes in the Western Conference.

Smyth was reunited with former linemates Doug Weight and Alex Selivanov, who each assisted on both of his goals.

At 3:38 of the first, Smyth redirected a Weight feed past Sean Burke to put Edmonton up 1-0. It was Weight's 400th career assist.

Guerin scored his first goal in 15 games when he lifted a backhander past Burke at 17:53 of the first.

Oilers forward Boyd Devereaux stole the puck in the Phoenix zone, circled the net and set up Guerin's 23rd goal of the season.

Devereaux later gave everyone at the Skyreach Centre a scare when he was taken off the ice on a stretcher after being run over by Phoenix forward Dallas Drake. The hit knocked Devereaux unconscious and he was taken to a local hospital for precautionary measures.

Moments before the incident, Smyth had put Edmonton up 3-0 when he streaked to the net and beat Burke to the glove side.

The goals were Smyth's team-leading 27th and 28th of the season.

Phoenix began its comeback when Green deflected a puck past Edmonton goalie Tommy Salo in the first minute of the third.

Salo recorded a career-best 26th win of the season.
