Sunday, January 23, 2000COYOTES 3, Sharks 2 (OT)Lumme stops Shark comeback with OT winnerPHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jyrki Lumme scored 4:16 into overtime for his 400th NHL point as the Phoenix Coyotes recorded their fourth straight home win, 3-2 over the San Jose Sharks. Coyotes captain Keith Tkachuk had the puck on the right side and fed Lumme, who beat goaltender Steve Shields with a wrist shot for his seventh goal of the season, third game-winner and 99th of his career. Lumme was open in front because Sharks right wing Todd Harvey broke his stick and went to the bench for a new one. By the time he returned, Lumme scored the game-winner. "It was kind of a fluky goal, but I'll take it," Lumme said. "I think it was a matter of time before we took it to them. We had a break with a guy breaking his stick. That helped." "It was so close to the bench and the sticks were sticking out, it was a split-second decision," Harvey explained. "Maybe if I had stayed in the zone and played with no stick it might have been a different outcome." The Coyotes are 4-1-2 in their last seven contests and remained one point ahead of second-place Dallas in the Pacific Division. They have won seven of their last nine home games against the Sharks. "Overall, we played a pretty solid game," Phoenix coach Bobby Francis said. "I liked the way we played with and without the puck. Fortunately, we were able to get that extra point in overtime." San Jose, which is three points behind Phoenix in the Pacific, fell to 1-2-1 in its last four games and is winless in its last four on the road (0-2-2). "I'm not sure who Tkachuk beat. I wanted Harvey out there on the faceoff and if he didn't break his stick, he could have come back," Sharks coach Darryl Sutter said. "It's too bad because our players played well enough to win and deserved to win, especially coming back in the third." Harvey pulled San Jose within 2-1 with 9:34 left in regulation. The Sharks were on a power play when rookie defenseman Brad Stuart fired a slap shot that Mike Ricci deflected to Harvey, who found an open net for his fifth of the season. Owen Nolan tied it just 2:09 later with his team-leading 30th goal. He carried into the Phoenix zone and beat goalie Sean Burke with a wrist shot just inside the left goalpost. It is the sixth time Nolan has reached the 30-goal mark and the first since scoring 31 in 1996-97. His career best is 42 with the Quebec Nordiques in 1991-92. Stuart finished with two assists and has four over the last two games. Louie DeBrusk, who won the hardest shot event at the Coyotes' skills competition on Friday, scored for his first point since November 28. He fired a slapper through Shields' pads in the second period for his second goal and third point of the season. Rick Tocchet added a power-play tally in the first period for Phoenix, which was 0-for-14 with the man advantage over the previous four contests.
