    COYOTES 4, Devils 2

Roenick does the trick against Devils

  • Summary

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jeremy Roenick recorded his seventh career hat trick and added an assist as the Phoenix Coyotes won their fourth straight game, 4-2 over the New Jersey Devils.

Former Devils goaltender Sean Burke made 35 saves in his debut for Phoenix, which snapped New Jersey's five-game winning streak.

Roenick opened the scoring with an unassisted power-play goal at 14:28 of the first period. With Ken Daneyko off for cross-checking, Roenick gathered a loose puck at the top of the left faceoff circle before firing a wrist shot that beat goaltender Chris Terreri to the near side for his ninth goal of the season.

After the teams exchanged scores in the second period, Roenick tallied 72 seconds into the third by collecting the puck off the end boards and lifting it over a sprawled Terreri for a 3-1 lead.

Roenick capped the scoring just under seven minutes later when his slap shot from just outside the right circle beat Terreri. The hat trick was Roenick's first since since February 24, 1994 against Winnipeg when he was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Burke, who was acquired by Phoenix for goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov on November 19, improved his record to 3-5, surrendering goals to Scott Niedermayer and Petr Sykora.

Despite being outshot 37-25, Phoenix won for the third time in four home games against New Jersey since moving from Winnipeg prior to the 1996-97 season.

Terreri, who had not started a game since October 23, made 21 saves and remains winless on the season (0-3).
