Muckalt ruins Shtalenkov's shutout
VANCOUVER (AP) -- Jeremy Roenick had two goals and two assists, including his 800th career point, as the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 Thursday night.
Goalie Mikhail Shtalenkov's shutout bid was foiled when Bill Muckalt scored with one second remaining in regulation as the Coyotes bounced back from an 0-1-1 skid.
Teppo Numminen had two goals and an assist, and Keith Tkachuk set up a pair as the Coyotes (6-2-3) matched a franchise record for most wins in the month of October, a mark the club has reached four other times, most recently going 6-4-2 in 1995.
The Canucks, whose 2-0-1 unbeaten streak ended, not only lost the game, but their second goalie in the span of two weeks when Kevin Weekes left the game 5:52 into the first period experiencing a "twinge in his right knee." With Garth Snow out with a fractured finger, Alfie Michaud made his NHL debut.
Michaud, the Final Four MVP in the University of Maine's NCAA title win last spring, allowed a goal on his first shot on net, and finished the game making 20 stops.
Roenick, who entered the night with 799 points, opened the scoring 11:01 into the game when, standing atop the crease, he slid the puck in beneath Michaud during a scramble in front of the Vancouver net after the Canucks' Ed Jovanovski failed to clear the zone.
Roenick made it 2-0 with a minute left in the second period, deflecting in Numminen's point shot during a Coyotes' power play.
Numminen sealed the victory by scoring a pair of goals over a 2:43 span, giving the Coyotes a 4-0 lead by the 8:59 mark of the third period. Roenick had a hand in both goals, continuing his domination of the Canucks.
In 36 career games against Vancouver, the 12-year veteran now has 19 goals and 49 points.
As a precaution, Weekes did not return. He is listed as day to day and could be ready for action when the Canucks host Nashville on Saturday.
With Snow not expected back for at least another two weeks, and no other goalie with NHL experience in the Canucks system, club president-general manager Brian Burke is intensifying his search for another proven netminder.
"I still want to get another guy in here even if (Weekes) is 100 percent," Burke said.
