George Gross chat on the Rocket

Claude: Do you know what the Rocket's pre-game ritual was?
George Gross: He had several rituals. He went and talked to the goalie, he glanced at every player with his piercing eyes and said "Let's go out and win it." I only saw him play one season and it was at the end of his career in 59-60.

    Forum for a true icon

By ROB BRODIE -- Ottawa Sun
It remains, to this day, perhaps the most spine-tingling, remarkably emotional sports moment I have ever witnessed on television.
Eleven minutes of thunderous applause in hockey's most famous shrine, an outpouring of love and reverence that reduced one of Canada's greatest hockey heroes to tears. Not to mention many in the crowd.

    'He was everything to us'

By EARL McRAE -- Ottawa Sun
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
MONTREAL -- Here, yesterday, in the great vastness that is the Notre Dame Basilica, the French people of Quebec said au revoir to a god who gave them their heart, soul, and respect; and as his casket was carried up the front steps and down the centre aisle, all eyes were on the short man with the white hair whose shoulder held up the left front corner.

    Adieu, M. Richard

    By HEATHER BIRD
    Toronto Sun
MONTREAL -- It is fitting that, in the end, the best seats in the house were reserved for some of his greatest fans.
While Maurice Richard's family and a sea of dignitaries -- among them Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Quebec Premier Lucien Bouchard -- crowded the floor of the Notre-Dame Basilica, some 1,000 seats in the upper galleries were reserved for the common folk.

    Rocket retains hold on fans

By LISA BURKE -- Ottawa Sun
MONTREAL -- Dick Irvin has been fortunate enough to call some of the greatest games in the NHL as the voice of the Montreal Canadiens for Hockey Night In Canada.
But it was as a young boy that he witnessed some of the game's greatest moments.

    'He would be proud'

By LISA BURKE -- Ottawa Sun
MONTREAL -- Maurice Richard earned many huge ovations during his hockey career and his life.
But the last one might have been the grandest of them all.

    The unifying force

By MIKE ULMER -- Toronto Sun
MONTREAL -- At Notre Dame Basilica, they said goodbye with their applause -- the fans wearing red Montreal Canadiens sweaters in the upper pews, the powerful and pinstriped clustered in the centre aisle, the clerics on the altar in their home whites, each drawn by a man whose appeal touched them all.
Yesterday's state funeral for Maurice (Rocket) Richard, dead five days of cancer, struck a perfect note. The marriage between Richard's compelling life and the symbol-laden Roman Catholic Church was necessary and fitting. Every saint started out a rookie in the secular league.
