Demitra sits out with muscle strain

DENVER (CP) -- Pavol Demitra, who leads the St. Louis Blues with 16 goals, missed the game against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday with a strained triceps muscle in his left arm.

The injury ended Demitra's consecutive games streak at 123. Demitra had not missed a game since April 7, 1998.

Demitra, 25, suffered the injury taking a shot on his first shift in the Blues' 3-2 loss to Nashville on Sunday at Kiel Center. He left the game briefly but returned.

"I shot it, and something snapped in my arm. It hurt," Demitra told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, adding that he returned to the game because "I just want to play. I like playing with pain."

Demitra is day-to-day. Coach Joel Quenneville and trainer Ray Barile said the injury is not serious.

"We're just being very cautious," Barile said. "From a medical standpoint, he could have played (against Colorado). We could have taped him and strapped him and treated him so he could play, but it's not worth taking a risk of further injury."
