Turgeon Named Player of the Week

NEW YORK (CP) -- NEW YORK (CP) -- Pierre Turgeon of the St. Louis Blues has been named the NHL's player of the week after leading all scorers with four goals and three assists in three games.

Turgeon edged Pittsburgh Penguins centre Alexei Kovalev, who had five goals and one assist in three games, and Detroit Red Wings forward Brendan Shanahan, who recorded four goals and two assists in three games.

Turgeon scored a hat trick in a 3-1 victory over Nashville on Dec. 2, after missing four games with a back injury.

Two days later, he had a goal and two assists in a 4-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks. In a 3-2 loss to Philadelphia the next night, he recorded an assist.

The 30-year-old native of Rouyn, Que., leads the Blues in scoring with 14 goals and 17 assists in 23 games. He currently ranks fifth overall in the NHL in points, eighth in goals and 11th in assists.

Turgeon, who also had a plus-minus rating of plus-5 on the week, last received the award in March 1997.
