Sunday, November 21, 1999 Double whammy for BluesThe good side of being a player in the National Hockey League is that the financial rewards are considerable. The bad side is that each shift could be your last. The St. Louis Blues' Geoff Courtnall, one of the league's good guys, was playing just another game on Oct. 16 when he was laid out by Bryan Berard's elbow. That was the end of Courtnall's career. He's the second player from last year's St. Louis Blues to suffer an untimely departure. Although no announcement has been made, the career of Tony Twist is over as well. Twist was injured in motorcycle accident during the summer and tore up his groin. He is making progress, but very slowly. Around the league: Player agent Art Kamensky says he is staying put, despite speculation he may switch to management if his friend Bob Gutkowski takes over the New York Islanders ... Turner Stevenson of the Montreal Canadiens continues to play despite a bad back. He is in Los Angeles with the Habs this weekend and is to be examined by renowned back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins ... Those of you who are waiting for news from the general managers' meeting that usually is held at this time of year are out of luck. The meeting has been cancelled. Sell your distillery stocks.
