Blues cautious after Courtnall dazed by check

By AL STRACHAN -- Toronto Sun
ST. LOUIS -- There was a scary moment late in the second period last night when Geoff Courtnall of the Blues tried to get to his feet, and fell back down again, after being hit by Bryan Berard of the Maple Leafs.
Courtnall, who missed 57 games with a concussion last season, didn't return to the game.
But athletic trainer Ray Barile said Courtnall underwent a full neurological assessment and showed no ill effects from the hit.
He was kept out of the game as a precautionary measure because of his medical history but was allowed to go home. He will undergo further tests prior to the Blues' next game.
He could play, Barile said, "but we're going to be overly cautious with him because of his history."
"I got dazed," Courtnall said after the game, a 4-2 St. Louis win over Toronto. "(Berard) just got his arm up. I watched the replay and it looked like I tried to step around him in the middle. He got me right on the chin.
"It looked like he had his elbow up trying to stop me but I don't think he meant to hurt me."
Leafs coach Pat Quinn, who had Courtnall as one of his players in Vancouver, felt it was a clean hit.
"Geoff was trying to stretch out," he said. "He wasn't paying attention and got nailed."
