Monday, September 27, 1999 Blues sign first-round pickST. LOUIS (AP) -- The St. Louis Blues signed first-round draft pick Barret Jackman, an 18-year-old defenceman, on Monday, and lost defenceman Jamie Rivers in the NHL waiver draft.Jackman, the 17th overall pick in the June draft, showed the Blues his feisty side by getting into three fights in four exhibition games. He also had a power-play goal against Nashville before being reassigned to his junior team, the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League, on Sept. 24. Jackman had 44 points and 259 penalty minutes in 70 games with Regina last season. In training camp he was paired with Al MacInnis or Chris Pronger at times, but general manager Larry Pleau said he's at least a few years away from playing in the NHL. "He's a great prospect for us," Pleau said. "He's young, he's enthusiastic and he plays physical. But you don't see too many young defencemen break in. "He's got two more years of junior, and then we'll see what we have." The New York Islanders made the 24-year-old Rivers the fourth of 10 players selected in the waiver draft. Pleau said Rivers, who had two goals and five assists in 76 games last season, wouldn't have made the Blues' roster. "It's just one of those things," Pleau said. "I wish him well."
