CAROLINA DREAMING: Maple Leafs D Bryan Berard and RW Mike Johnson pronounced themselves ready to take on the Hurricanes tonight. Berard had been aiming for this game since a nagging groin injury required a few days off last week. "It's tough to crack a winning lineup," Berard said jokingly of Toronto's back-to-back victories over Edmonton and Washington. "I'm not pain free, but I'm ready to roll." Johnson is not 100% either, but is much improved from the weekend when a rib muscle problem made it difficult to move. "It's not like a bruise or a broken bone, just a pulling (sensation)," Johnson said. All players on the team with the exception of Nikolai Antropov (shoulder) made the trip. D Alexander Karpovtsev (shoulder) is also on the injured reserve list. SNOOZE ALARM: General manager/coach Pat Quinn's heart was in Hamilton yesterday where his home-town Tiger-Cats were parading the Grey Cup. Quinn's grandfather, George (Snooze) Ireland, played for the Hamilton Tigers around the turn of the century. "They won the (Dominion Championship) title in 1908, before there was a Grey Cup," Quinn said. "He was team captain and he would have been a happy man today." HIS HONOUR, THE MAIR: With his goal against the Capitals on Monday, C Adam Mair became only the second active NHL player to score a goal in his first playoff game and his first regular-season game. Rod Brind'Amour of the Flyers was the other, while eight other active players have managed the feat in reverse order. BRIEFLY: Bill Watters, assistant to the Leafs' president and the general manager of the St. John's farm team, is in Newfoundland this week trying to see what ails the 7-15-2 club ... Tonight will be the third meeting of the Hurricanes and Maple Leafs this season, and Toronto has not had to face unsigned free agent Keith Primeau in any of the games. But Primeau must have some friends remaining somewhere in the NHL as he he received 1,107 votes to start in the all-star game, despite not having played a game this season.
