Sunday, December 5, 1999 Leafs WatchRULES RHUBARB: Penguins officials were grabbing for the NHL rulebook during the second period last night when Leafs defenceman Bryan Berard tried a novel way of hampering Robert Lang's dangerous rush. Caught out of position on the one-on-one, Berard fired a discarded glove about 10 feet into the path of the Pens forward, who kept going, but was unsuccessful on his shot. Regulations about deliberately shooting loose equipment such as gloves and sticks into play are quite clear -- a penalty shot should be awarded. "Really?," Berard said with a mischievous grin after the game. "I was just trying to get that glove out of the way." REMEMBERING DENNIS: The ushers and security staff at Air Canada Centre wore blue and white ribbons to honour late usher Dennis Goodwin. Goodwin, 67, passed away when he arrived home following the Capitals-Leafs game last Monday. His funeral Friday was attended by members of the Leafs coaching staff and players as well as Air Canada Centre personnel. Goodwin also was honoured with a video tribute during the first period. CONSTANTINE'S FURY: Penguins coach Kevin Constantine was so upset with the play of his club he stormed out of the rink after the Penguins were beaten 5-2 by San Jose last Thursday. It was the first time he shunned the post-game news conference since he became coach in Pittsburgh 186 games ago. Constantine held a closed-door meeting with the players following Friday's practice before the team travelled to Toronto. "Obviously, he is not happy with our performance, which is understandable," said Penguins defenceman Jiri Slegr, whose club is 8-12-3-3 entering last night's game. "He didn't say anything personal. He just said we didn't work hard enough to win the hockey game." BROWN BACK: Veteran winger Rob Brown returned to the Penguins lineup last night for the first time since leaving the team Nov. 12 to be with his sister in Edmonton. She was in a coma after being involved in a car accident but passed away last week. Brown rejoined the Penguins last Wednesday, but did not play against San Jose Thursday.
