VALK OUT: Maple Leafs winger Garry Valk did not make the trip to Boston. He sliced open his left elbow Tuesday when he fell during the third period of the Leafs' game against Anaheim. Six stitches were needed to close the gash. The Leafs are being careful with the injury because an elbow easily can become infected when opened. Farmhand defenceman D.J. Smith missed several weeks with an infected elbow last season. "I hope to be back on Saturday (against Detroit)," Valk said. That means Todd Warriner will return to the lineup and either Tie Domi or Kris King also will be in. Domi has missed four games with a rib injury. "I am feeling better," Domi said. "We will see how it responds to treatment." Defenceman Dmitry Yushkevich also missed practice. He has an infected tooth but will play tonight. Defenceman Chris McAllister likely will sit out. Curtis Joseph will start in goal. POWER-LESS: The Leafs power play has sagged again. It has not scored in its past 16 chances, dating back to the first period of the Oct. 30 game against Calgary when Bryan Berard scored with the man advantage. "It has been like our whole offensive game recently," Leafs general manager/coach Pat Quinn said. "Our power play looks like it did last year when we struggled. We are a bunch of individuals. We keep turning down options until it's too late and then we turn it over. We have a very immobile power play right now that is certainly not developing any chances." Quinn used captain Mats Sundin at the point Wednesday against Anaheim in order to allow Yanic Perreault to use his playmaking skill from the side boards. GO SENATORS: Quinn agrees with the Ottawa Senators' decision to suspend holdout forward Alexei Yashin. "It's Ottawa's right," he said. "He violated his contract. Obviously there is no such thing as forcing him to play. But what are the results? Is it right for him to walk away and supposedly become a free agent? "I don't think he should be able to and I certainly support Ottawa's position through this."
