    Leafs Watch

By LANCE HORNBY -- Toronto Sun

BREWER RECOVERING: Carl Brewer, the great Leafs defenceman who spearheaded a successful pension lawsuit against the NHL on behalf of retired players, is recovering in Sunnybrook Hospital from a mild heart attack.

"We hope his condition will be upgraded in a day or two," a close friend of Brewer's said yesterday.

Brewer, 61, was admitted to hospital on Sunday complaining of back pains. It was later determined he had suffered the attack. Brewer played for the Leafs from 1957-65, winning three Stanley Cups. He made a brief comeback in 1980.

CAPTAIN TO CAPTAIN: Mats Sundin was sorry to hear of the possible end of Wendel Clark's NHL career. The two captains' careers always will be linked after the blockbuster trade in June of 1994 with the Quebec Nordiques. Clark had a physical element Sundin could never hope to match, but fans eventually embraced the high-scoring Swede as a franchise player. The Leafs reacquired Clark and he played with Sundin for three years.

"It was very interesting to come here at first because it put me in an awkward position," Sundin said. "People still regard him here as a leader, one of the greatest Leafs. I'm accepted in a different way here than in my first year.

"I know he had a great career battered by injuries. It's not pleasant what he is going through."

ONE OF THE BOYS: With Nik Antropov skating between enforcers Tie Domi and Kris King, the big centre inevitably will become mixed up in their on-ice scrums. At 6-foot-5, the 19-year-old Kazakh probably COULD handle himself in a fight, but the thought mortified Domi.

"He asked me in training camp to teach him a bit about fighting," Domi said. "I said 'Forget it, we don't need you getting hurt.' "

DAYTIMER TIME: The Leafs wives and partners are once again raising money for charity through sales of the Maple Leaf Daytimer. The full colour daily calendar, packed with individual and family pictures, is available for $15 at Mr. Sub stores, the ACC and during seven December home games.
