Monday, November 22, 1999 Flyers, McCarthy to hear nothing from quiet Domi
McCarthyism is ancient history for Tie Domi. The normally chatty Maple Leafs winger has warned the media he will not address the subject of an ugly playoff incident last season with the Flyers' Sandy McCarthy leading up to the first regular-season rematch between the clubs, Friday in Philadelphia. Domi was accused of uttering a racial slur at McCarthy during Game 3 of the opening-round series. The Barrie-raised McCarthy's father is black and his mother is a native Canadian. Domi hotly denied the charge, claiming that McCarthy concocted the story to save himself from a suspension after spitting on Domi during the same game. An NHL investigation decided there wasn't enough evidence to support either claim. Domi told The Toronto Sun a few days after Game 3 of the playoff series that he would not fight McCarthy in future meetings because he doesn't respect him, although the unwritten ban of fisticuffs doesn't apply to the regular season. But the normally chatty Domi won't stir the pot now. "I'm saying 'no comment' from now right up to game time and I'll stick to that," Domi said. "It's a dead issue. If we meet on the ice, it will be just hockey." McCarthy has six points in 20 games this season, while Domi has two assists in 17 starts. The Flyers were bitter about the way the playoff series ended, with a non-call by referee Terry Gregson as John LeClair was hauled down and the Leafs survived a 1-0 win. Chairman Ed Snider and coach Roger Neilson were fined almost $100,000 US for calling the referee every name in the book.
