SHANNON TO St. JOHN'S: The Maple Leafs have recalled LW Darrin Shannon from the IHL's Chicago Wolves to Toronto's main farm team in St. John's. It's a move with two purposes -- to get the struggling Baby Leafs (4-8-2) some experience and provide Shannon, 29, with more playing time. After being one of the final cuts in Toronto's camp, the utility forward had four points in nine games with Chicago. ONE FINE DAY? Leafs general manager/coach Pat Quinn was waiting to hear if an NHL investigation into his conduct on Saturday night would result in a further fine. Quinn was slapped with an automatic $200 charge for a gross misconduct during a dispute with linesman Scott Driscoll after the game, regarding a complaint that the Calgary Flames had jumped offside on a neutral-zone faceoff with 4.3 seconds to play. "I've talked to the league about it, but it's no one's business," Quinn said yesterday. He did dispute the notion he screamed at the linesman. "I talked loudly to him," Quinn said. "I don't scream." CANES LOSE DRIVE: The Hurricanes are elated that their 300-kilometre round trip to Greensboro has been eliminated thanks to the completion of the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena. No one hated the trip more than goaltender Arturs Irbe. "Going down was okay, because you treated it like a road game with an afternoon meal," Irbe said. "But it was tough driving home alone afterward. You're tired and that road (Highway 40 between Greensboro and Raleigh) is dark and empty. I tried to get on the cell phone and talk to people to stay awake. "Your knees and other joints stiffen up in the car when you're in that long. But you don't want to stop out there, even for a few minutes, you just want to get home." DESIGN FLAW: In general, the Leafs had good impressions of their first visit to the Hurricanes' new rink. But the Leafs weren't enthralled with a labyrinth of cramped rooms that made up the visitors quarters and Quinn complained of having to walk across the ice from Toronto's room to the bench. "Access to the bench shouldn't be that hard in a 21st century arena," Quinn said, thinking of all the close calls he has had trying to cross the ice in dress shoes.
