Primeau attends game but not to talk with Leafs

By TIM WHARNSBY -- Toronto Sun
Mats Sundin and Pavel Bure were not the only standout NHLers sitting on the sidelines at the Air Canada Centre last night.
Restricted free agent Keith Primeau, who has been engaged in a heated three-month contract battle with the Carolina Hurricanes, took in the Panthers-Maple Leafs game.
Was the centre there to meet with the Leafs?
"No, we didn't talk," Leafs executive Bill Watters said. "I talked briefly with his agent, but he has contacted us regularly.
"There still are two main obstacles for us with (Primeau). The compensation to sign him and what it would cost in terms of his salary."
Primeau's salary demands are $5 million US a season.
If the Leafs were to sign him to an offer sheet and the Hurricanes didn't match the offer, the Leafs would have to give up five consecutive first-round draft picks.
Florida assistant general manager Chuck Fletcher said his club didn't meet with Primeau. The Panthers can't sign the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Oshawa native because the Panthers gave up a 2000 first-round draft pick in the trade last season with the Vancouver Canucks to acquire Bure.
