    Maple Leafs 4, RANGERS 3

Late goal by Thomas gives Leafs win

  • Summary

NEW YORK (AP) -- Steve Thomas scored a power-play goal with one minute left in regulation and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the New York Rangers 4-3 Thursday night, ending the Rangers' seven-game winning streak.

Thomas, who also had a second-period goal, came from behind the net to sweep the rebound of Jonas Hoglund's in-close shot past Mike Richter to give the Maple Leafs their first win at Madison Square Garden in 10 tries (1-8-1) dating back to a 3-1 victory on Dec. 19, 1990.

Hoglund and Kevyn Adams also scored for Toronto. Glenn Healy won his first game since Dec. 21 by stopping 35 shots.

Theoren Fleury, John MacLean and Mike York had goals for the Rangers, who saw their longest winning streak since the 1993-94 season end.

For the second straight game, the Rangers allowed the first goal, this time on a power play. Hoglund put the Maple Leafs ahead at 13:39 on his 22nd goal.

Fleury tied the game at 14:36 when his slap shot from the top of the left circle spun off the inside of Healy's glove, popped over his right shoulder and settled in the net.

Toronto scored twice early in the second period in a 47-second span for a 3-1 lead.

Adams scored off another big rebound by Richter at 3:39 and Thomas sent a hard 40-footer from the left side between Richter's pads at 4:26.

MacLean answered at 5:57 off a big rebound Healy left after stopping Valeri Kamensky's shot.

Richter hung tough afterwards, as he made two big stops on Nik Antropov, one with his skates and one with his stick in the seventh minute.

York tied the game 67 seconds into the final period on a power play flip in from the left crease.
