Khristich scores two and Healy gets shutout for Leafs

  • Summary

TORONTO (CP) -- Dmitri Khristich scored two goals and Glenn Healy stopped 16 shots for his 12th career shutout as the Toronto Maple Leafs blanked the Atlanta Thrashers 4-0 Wednesday night.
Mike Johnson, with a goal and an assist, and Alexander Karpovtsev also scored for Toronto. The Leafs remained first overall in the NHL with an 8-3-1-0 record and have won three in a row.
Healy was making his third start of the season, giving Curtis Joseph the night off. His toughest test came against Denny Lambert on a goal-mouth scramble midway through the second period.
The expansion Thrashers arrived in Toronto on their private jet at 3 a.m. Wednesday morning after beating Calgary 2-1 for their first home victory Tuesday.
Goalie Damian Rhodes, the star of the Calgary game while stopping all 14 third-period shots, also stopped all 16 first-period shots by the Leafs, who finally broke through on their third shot of the second period. Atlanta managed two shots in the first period
Toronto opened the scoring at 2:25 of the second period when rookie Nik Antropov swatted the puck away from defenceman Darryl Shannon onto Johnson's stick. Johnson lifted a high backhander over Rhodes's shoulder for his fifth goal of the season.
Johnson did all the work on Toronto's second goal, outskating a pair of Atlanta forwards, going around another and getting a shot on Rhodes. Khristich flipped in the rebound at 17:39.
Karpovtsev made it 3-0 at 5:40 of the third, with the Leafs in the midst of a full two-minute 5-on-3 man advantage. Khristich rounded out the scoring with a power-play shot from the high slot at 16:09.
The Leafs close out their five-game homestand Saturday against Calgary.
Notes: Toronto left-winger Sergei Berezin led the NHL with 52 shots entering Wednesday's games, and had six of Toronto's 16 shots in the first period. ... Toronto had a franchise 18-16-3 record against the former Atlanta Flames from 1972-73 through 1979-80. The Flames moved to Calgary in 1980.
