Tuesday, August 1, 2000 Canucks hire Bob Murray as scoutVANCOUVER (AP) -- The Vancouver Canucks have hired former Chicago Blackhawks general manager Bob Murray as a professional scout. In addition to the NHL, Murray will also be responsible for scouting teams in the International Hockey League and the American Hockey League. Murray's appointment came on the same day the Canucks announced that Mike Penny was leaving his job as the team's vice president of amateur scouting to become player personnel director for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Murray, 45, spent more than 25 years with the Blackhawks in roles ranging from player to his most recent position as general manager. Murray was originally drafted by the Blackhawks in 1974 and spent all 1,008 of his career NHL games patrolling the Chicago blueline. During his 15-year career, Murray scored 132 goals and added 382 assists. He played in the NHL All-Star game in 1980 and 1983. Murray returned to the Blackhawks as a pro scout in 1990, and was promoted to director of player personnel within one year. He moved to the business side of hockey as Chicago's assistant general manager in 1995, and became general manager after Bob Pulford resigned in 1997.
