Friday, February 18, 2000 Messier battles on surrounded by trade rumoursKANATA, Ont. (CP) -- Mark Messier isn't letting the rumours of his impending trade affect his play with the Canucks, who face the Senators tomorrow (4 p.m. EST, CBC)."It is one of the things you have to be sensitive about," Messier said. "You have to keep it out of the dressing room. The focus has to remain with the team on the ice. It can't become a distraction." Messier, 39, continues to play well for the Canucks. "He's a leader on our team and we look up to him," said winger Donald Brashear. Canucks GM Brian Burke denied he spoke to the New York Rangers about Messier. "I've never, ever discussed Mark Messier with the Rangers and with (GM) Neil Smith," Burke told the New York Daily News. "And I haven't talked to any other team about trading Mark Messier. Have I gotten calls about Mark? Yes. Do I think Mark could help a lot of teams? Absolutely. "But I've told them all the same thing: 'I'm not going to trade Mark Messier and I'm not going to ask him to waive his no-trade clause.' Mark Messier will be in control of this situation."
