    McSorley may be charged criminally

By DIRK SOETERIK -- SLAM! Sports
Marty McSorley's punishment for hitting Vancouver Canuck Donald Brashear in the head may extend past the laws of the NHL.

In this image from television, Boston Bruins Marty McSorley hits Vancouver Canuck Donald Brashear with a swinging slash to the right temple on Monday Feb 21, 2000 in Vancouver. Brashear was twitching on the ice as trainers rushed to his side. He was later diagnosed with a concussion and was walking around the dressing room. McSorley later admitted, "I got no excuse. I got carried away. It was a real dumb play." McSorley is expected to be suspended. (AP Photo/ESPN)
The long arm of the law may be ready to punish him criminally.

SLAM! Sports has learned that the Vancouver Police Department is looking at whether or not criminal charges should be filed against McSorley, a 16-year NHL veteran.

"The Vancouver Police Department has assigned two investigators and they are conducting an assault investigation," VPD spokesperson Janice Williams said early Tuesday afternoon.

The two-handed swinging slash left Brashear unconscious and bloody. It came with less than five seconds left to play in the game.

Canucks' GM Brian Burke, a former NHL vice-president in charge of discipline, doesn't think the Vancouver police - or any police force - should get involved.

Burke told Vancouver radio station CKNW this morning that it should remain an NHL matter.

"Leave this stuff on the ice. Leave it to the National Hockey League," he said. "We don't need the Vancouver police department or the RCMP involved in this."

McSorley was suspended indefinitely today, pending a hearing Wednesday in New York on Wednesday.
