Rare Ellett goal is winner against Vancouver

  • Summary

VANCOUVER (CP) -- Dave Ellett's first goal in 124 games helped lift the St. Louis Blues to a 5-2 victory Thursday night over the Vancouver Canucks.

Ellett, who hadn't scored since Dec. 28, 1997, had his deflected shot fumbled into the net by netminder Garth Snow as a St. Louis power play expired, breaking a 2-2 tie.

Lubos Bartecko, Stephane Richer, Mike Eastwood and Marty Reasoner also scored for the Blues, who have won five in a row and are 13-0-2 against Canadian-based teams this season.

Eastwood made it 4-2 with a short-handed goal 22 seconds into the third and Reasoner closed out the scoring with his third goal in as many games since being called up from AHL Worcester.

Peter Schaefer and Adrian Aucoin replied for the struggling Canucks, who have lost 12 in a row to St. Louis.

Vancouver has just two wins at home since Dec. 22, and only one win and two ties in their last 10 games overall.

Barteko opened the scoring on the Blues' first shot on Garth Snow. He was in alone after backhand passes from Michal Handzus and Pavol Demitra, who extended a consecutive-game points streak to eight.

Schaefer tied it 2:20 later by outwaiting goalie Roman Turek. Aucoin gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead with 41 seconds left in the period with his second goal in five games.

Richer tied the game 2-2 early in the second period when he snapped Mike Eastwood's pass between Snow's legs for his second goal in nine games since being acquired from Tampa Bay.

Notes: Blues defenceman Al MacInnis returned to the lineup after suffering a collapsed lung last month. ... Adrian Aucoin played despite leaving practice Wednesday with a sore groin. ... Vancouver defenceman Greg Hawgood returned after being a healthy scratch Tuesday for the first time this season.
