    Marchant helps Oilers tie Canucks

  • Summary

EDMONTON (CP) -- Todd Marchant's second goal of the game with 1:42 left in the third period lifted the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-3 tie with the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night.

Marchant scored after taking a perfect pass from Mike Grier and shooting the puck into a wide-open net. Marchant extended his points streak to a career-high six games. He has four goals and five assists during that span.

The Canucks, who rallied from a 2-0 second-period deficit, had taken a 3-2 lead on Trent Klatt's second goal of the game at 14:08 of the third. Klatt also added an assist. Markus Naslund had a goal and two assists for the Canucks. Mark Messier assisted on all three Vancouver goals.

Doug Weight scored the other goal for the Oilers. Edmonton goalie Tommy Salo made 35 saves.

Edmonton took a 1-0 lead at 14:15 of the first period when Bill Guerin fired a slapshot from the top of the faceoff circle that deflected off Weight and past Canucks goalie Felix Potvin.

Marchant made it 2-0 with a deflection of Grier's pass from the left boards 26 seconds into the second period.

Naslund got Vancouver on the scoreboard when he beat Salo on a wraparound with 1:09 remaining in the second.

Klatt tied it 2-2 by tipping in Naslund's point shot at 2:53 of the third period.

Klatt made it 3-2 for Vancouver when he jammed in the puck on a power play with 5:52 left in regulation.

     Potvin finished with 21 shots.
