About the coin
The unspoiled wilderness and natural beauty of Ontario's Algonquin Park inspired Tom Thomson when he painted The Jack Pine (1916-1917). Thomson's distinct approach to portraying the Canadian landscape greatly influenced his fellow artists who later formed the Group of Seven.
Near the turn of the century, Thomson acquired a reputation as a skilled designer/illustrator. He came to realize the limitations of commercial work and began to develop his breakout style of landscapes. He avidly and successfully pursued his art and, being a passionate outdoorsman, spent several summers sketching and painting the rugged scenery of Algonquin Park. The Jack Pine -- 2002 22-Karat Gold Coin is a tribute to Thomson's artistic originality and intensity.
