A nasty influenza strain has claimed a sixth life in London and Middlesex, health officials said yesterday. Four deaths have occurred in long-term care facilities, where elderly residents are highly vulnerable to flu, and two out among the general population, said Middlesex-London associate medical officer of health Bryna Warshawsky.
Twelve flu deaths have been reported since December in the seven-county London region.
Seven flu outbreaks in London and Middlesex are over and 11 more are continuing, said Warshawsky.
The two people who died in the general population both had underlying medical problems, she said. One was elderly, the other middle-aged.
Ontario is being swept this winter by an especially nasty flu virus, A Fujian.
Health officials urge precautions to limit the spread of the virus.
People should not go to work or school and should not visit hospitals or long-term care facilities if they are ill, said Warshawsky.
Washing hands frequently and keeping hands away from eyes, nose and mouth are important, she said.
"You can introduce the virus through the mouth, eyes or nose if you have been shaking hands or have been in a contaminated environment."
People should wash their hands as many times as practical, but especially before eating and after potential contacts with the virus, Warshawsky said.
"If you've been shaking a couple of people's hands, that's a good time to do it."
She said regular hand washing with soap and water can be augmented by the use of waterless hand cleaners.
