Gunman ends standoff by surrendering to police

CP   2004-01-19 06:29:03

WINDSOR -- A standoff between Ontario Provincial Police and a barricaded gunman ended peacefully Saturday night. OPP spokesperson Const. Brian Knowler said 41-year-old Randy Pahomey gave himself up to police at 10:20 p.m.

"He advised officers he wanted to surrender himself," said Knowler.

"It all ended peacefully, which is exactly what we wanted the whole time, and we were able to get him without any kind of struggle or any kind of violence," said Knowler.

Pahomey barricaded himself in a home in Lakeshore, just west of Windsor, Friday afternoon.

Knowler said members of the OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit tried repeatedly to contact Pahomey Saturday by dropping a cellphone in the house and calling to him on loudspeakers.

Pahomey was arrested on a federal warrant issued a week ago after he failed to show up at a correctional institution to serve a weekend sentence.
