QUEBEC -- The Kitchener Rangers made a trip to a possible Memorial Cup championship shorter with a 4-1 win over the Hull Olympiques last night in swampy conditions at Colisee Pepsi.
The Ontario Hockey League champions are 2-0 and have secured at least a berth in Saturday's semifinal. They can land a spot in Sunday's final with a victory today against the Western Hockey League champion Kelowna Rockets (Rogers Sportsnet, 7 p.m.).
Hull and Kelowna are 1-1 and the host Quebec Remparts are 0-2.
Derek Roy, Jesse Boucher, George Halkidis and Petr Kanko scored for Kitchener, while Sam Roberts replied for the Quebec league champions in front of 8,451 fans.
Temperatures as high as 29 C during the day outside the arena and hot television lights in it made the ice slick after the first period. Officials and players were repeatedly wiping their visors and the linesmen got out the squeegees at the beginning of the third period to clear away water from in front of the net.
"Derek Roy had a pair of swimming trunks on under his equipment," Rangers coach Pete DeBoer joked. "It was a war out there. It was wet and slow."
The Olympiques are opportunistic scorers but couldn't do enough to make up for breakdowns on their blue-line on the Rangers' third and fourth goals.
"They made us look bad, especially in the one-on-one battles," Olympiques coach Benoit Groulx said.
Hull goalie Eric Lafrance did what he could by making 34 saves, but he was often left alone. Kitchener goalie Scott Dickie of London made 25 saves.
Kitchener will face a Rockets' team that has been improving through its first two games and Kelowna will want to avoid any tiebreaker scenario on Friday.
"They rely on strong defence and they take advantage of your mistakes," DeBoer said. "They're a team that can make you look bad."
