Scotland rallies to beat Aussies, makes it to semis
Scotland scored three short-handed goals within a minute to shake off a 4-3 Australia lead in the first quarter, en route to a 16-10 victory in Kitchener at the world indoor lacrosse championship yesterday. The win put Scotland in third place in the standings, pushing the United States into fourth and a semifinal with Canada today. Scotland will face the Iroquois Nation today in the other semifinal.
Football coaching legend Frank Ivy dies at 87
Former Edmonton coach Frank (Pop) Ivy, who led the team to three straight Grey Cup championships in the 1950s, has died. He was 87. Ivy, the only man to coach in the NFL, AFL and CFL, died Saturday in Norman, Okla., the Eskimos said yesterday. The Eskimos won Grey Cups in 1954, '55 and '56 under Ivy. Ivy was a star at the University of Oklahoma and named an all-American in 1939. He played for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Cardinals before returning to Oklahoma. He joined the Eskimos in 1954. Ivy returned to the NFL in 1958 to spend four seasons with the Chicago Cardinals before going to the AFL's Houston Oilers.
NFL rethinking 1925 championship
The NFL is looking into awarding the 1925 championship to the Pottsville (Pa.) Maroons instead of the Chicago Cardinals. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said yesterday the league would investigate what led Joe Carr, then NFL president, to disqualify the Maroons and rescind their NFL rights. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell made a presentation yesterday at the NFL meetings on behalf of the Maroons.
