FC Porto takes UEFA Cup

AP   2003-05-22 03:01:22

SEVILLE, SPAIN -- FC Porto won the UEFA Cup, its first European trophy in 16 years, with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Celtic in the final yesterday.

Brazilian striker Derlei got the winning goal, his second of the game and his 11th in the tournament, five minutes from the end of extra time when Celtic was down to 10 men.

Henrik Larsson twice pulled Celtic level after Derlei and Dmitri Alenichev had put Porto ahead, but Bobo Balde's dismissal in the fifth minute of extra time meant the end to Celtic's chances of winning its first European trophy since "The players put absolutely everything into the game and we couldn't ask for any more," said Celtic manager Martin O'Neill. "If we had 11 men in extra time, I thought we were the strongest side at that stage. But it wasn't to be. Bobo got sent off and we were obviously very tired."

Derlei opened the scoring just before halftime, tapping the ball in from short range after Celtic 'keeper Robert Douglas deflected Maniche's shot into his path.

But two minutes after the restart Larsson scored the equalizer for his 200th goal for the club, meeting a cross from Didier Agathe and outjumping Ricardo Costa to head the ball across the goal and in off the post.

Russian midfielder Alenichev put Porto back into the lead six minutes later after receiving a through ball from Deco, before Larsson replied with another header for his 11th UEFA Cup goal.

Celtic held on with 10 men for 25 minutes of extra time after Dianbobo Balde was sent off after being shown his second yellow card.

No team from either country had ever won this tournament.

The UEFA Cup, Europe's second-tier tournament after the Champions League, is Porto's second trophy of the season after it was runaway winner of the Portuguese championship -- its seventh domestic league title in 10 years.
