MILWAUKEE -- When Geoff Jenkins walked to the plate in the seventh inning yesterday, home runs were on his mind.
"You try not to think about it, but you'd be lying if it wasn't in the back of your mind," he said.
Jenkins homered in his first three at-bats off Jake Peavy. Then, with a chance to hit four homers in a game for just the 15th time in major-league history, Jenkins grounded out and struck out as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 10-0.
"It wasn't really my swing. It was pitch selection," he said. "It's just one of those days when I saw the ball good."
While Jenkins and Richie Sexson supplied much of the offence, Wayne Franklin pitched a two-hitter in his 14th major-league start. Rondell White beat out an infield hit leading off the second, and pinch-hitter Ramon Vazquez singled to centre leading off the ninth.
Jenkins, 3-for-5 with four RBIs, hit a two-run homer in the first to put Milwaukee ahead, then hit solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings. He grounded back to reliever Luther Hackman in the seventh, and struck out against Mike Matthews in the eighth.
It was the second three-homer game for Jenkins, who also accomplished the feat against Montreal on April 28, 2001. He has 11 homers this season.
"All in all, it was a good day for us," Jenkins said.
Franklin, a 29-year-old left-hander, struck out five and walked two, helping the Brewers extended a winning streak to three for the first time this season.
