BOSTON -- Manny Ramirez went 4-for-4 with his 23rd homer and the Boston Red Sox hit a season-high nine doubles as they beat the Detroit Tigers 14-5 last night. The Red Sox had 18 hits and batted around twice in a game for the second time this season as they continued to shake off a brief slump. The best-hitting team in the majors had scored 17 runs in six games before beating Toronto 9-4 Sunday.
Ramirez, who was 0-for-14 before a tying single in Boston's 5-4 win Saturday, has six hits in his last eight at-bats. He left the game in the top of the seventh with the score 13-3.
Ramirez drove in three runs with a solo homer, two singles and a double. Bill Mueller and Jeremy Giambi also had two RBIs as Boston scored at least 10 runs for the 14th time in its 58 wins.
John Burkett (8-4) allowed three runs in five innings and is 5-1 in his last seven starts with the last three wins coming against Detroit, baseball's worst team. For his career, he's 6-0 in eight starts against the Tigers.
Burkett allowed just three singles in the first four innings before giving up three runs on five hits in the fifth. He was replaced in the sixth by Casey Fossum, who worked the last four innings for the second save of his career and first of the season.
After Jeremy Bonderman (3-14) retired the side in order in the first, he allowed five runs on six hits in the second and left after the first two batters in the third -- Ramirez with a homer and Kevin Millar with his second double of the game.
Steve Sparks came in to pitch and, by the end of the third, the score was 12-0.
Detroit finally reached Burkett in the fifth when Matt Walbeck singled, Alex Sanchez doubled and Warren Morris, Dmitri Young and Carlos Pena followed with RBI singles.
Boston made it 13-3 in the fifth on consecutive doubles by Nomar Garciaparra and Ramirez before Young hit his 20th homer, a solo shot in the seventh. Doug Mirabelli got Boston's last double in the seventh, driving in the 14th run.
