DETROIT -- Aaron Guiel hit a three-run homer and Runelvys Hernandez won for the first time in more than three months as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 8-3 last night. Angel Berroa added three hits for Kansas City, which won for the second time in five games.
Hernandez (5-3), winless since April 22, entered with an 0-3 record in his last six starts. He allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings, walking two and striking out three.
Wil Ledezma (3-4) allowed four runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings for Detroit, which has lost seven of eight overall and 1-9 against the Royals.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first on back-to-back doubles by Bobby Higginson and Dmitri Young.
Kansas City went up 2-1 in the third on Ken Harvey's two-run single. With one out, Carlos Febles singled, and after a flyout, Ledezma walked Joe Randa and Carlos Beltran to load the bases.
Harvey lined a two-run single to left, then he and Beltran pulled off a double steal before Berroa flew out to end the inning.
The Tigers nearly tied it in the fourth when they had runners on first and second with one out, but Harvey made an outstanding pickup of Eric Munson's hard grounder and turned a 3-6-3 double play.
Kansas City made it 6-1 in the sixth, chasing Ledezma. Berroa led off with a double and went to third on Michael Tucker's bunt single. Desi Relaford flied out but Mike DiFelice hit a sacrifice fly to deep right-centre off Chris Spurling.
Febles walked and Guiel hit his ninth homer this season.
