Delgado sets Jays' RBI mark

CP   2003-07-26 03:50:26

TORONTO -- On a night Carlos Delgado used the longball to make some team history, the Toronto Blue Jays used some small-ball to pick up a win. Delgado ended a 18-game drought with a three-run homer last night, becoming the first Blue Jay to drive in 100 runs in six straight seasons, and Reed Johnson scored the winning run on an error as Toronto beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3.

"They say the good run producers drive in 100 runs every year and I want to be in that group," said Delgado. "I take a lot of pride in my RBIs and I guess that's a nice benchmark."

The all-star first baseman also singled in an insurance run during the decisive seventh inning to push his RBI total to 103 this season, also making him the fastest Blue Jay to reach the century mark. It took him just 102 games -- Joe Carter needed 104 outings in 1994.

"It's kind of cool," said Delgado. "The biggest thing is we have guys who can hit on this team and they make it easy on me."

The game was tied 3-3 in the seventh when Frank Catalanotto walked with one out. Johnson came on as pinch-runner, stole second -- an atypical play for the Jays -- and reached third on a wild pitch.

"I told (Johnson) when he was putting on his helmet, 'This guy is slow to the plate, if you get it go,' " said manager Carlos Tosca.

After Eric Hinske walked, Vernon Wells hit a shallow fly off Jason Johnson (8-5) to centre. Reed Johnson started toward home then stopped and watched as centre-fielder Luis Matos' throw bounced past catcher Brook Fordyce to the backstop. Reed Johnson then sprinted home to break the tie, just beating Fordyce's tag.

"I don't think there's any way you can point at Luis Matos and say he shouldn't make that throw," said Orioles manager Mike Hargrove. "He has to make that throw."

Delgado then made it 5-3 with a single off B. J. Ryan.
