Redgrave matriarch dies at 92

Rachel Kempson, an actor who appeared with many of Britain's leading theatre companies and became the matriarch of the Redgrave acting dynasty, has died at age 92.

The Redgraves' three generations of talent include Kempson's husband, Michael Redgrave, children Vanessa, Lynn and Corin Redgrave and granddaughters Natasha Richardson (married to actor Liam Neeson), Joely Richardson and Jemma Redgrave. Kempson died early Saturday of natural causes. She made her professional stage debut in 1933 in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and went on to appear with companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company, the English Stage Company and the Old Vic. She also appeared in many films, sometimes with other family members. In the 1980s, she played Lady Manners in the British television series The Jewel in the Crown.

Minnelli breaks kneecap

Performer Liza Minnelli broke her right kneecap yesterday when she tripped over a step at a hotel in Bologna, Italy, but still plans to sing at a benefit concert with famed tenor Luciano Pavarotti, her publicist said. Minnelli, 58, was taken to a nearby hospital and will have to wear a full-leg cast for about four weeks, Warren Cowan said. "Even though she won't be able to rehearse, she is going to perform Tuesday night with Pavarotti, even wearing the cast." Minnelli tripped in the Hotel Grand Baglioni as she walked from her suite to the elevator. She and her husband, producer David Gest, were going to dinner.

The three-hour contest came down to the last vote from telephone callers from 26 countries. Tatu, the provocative chart-topping Russian teen duo heavily favoured to win, came in third. Former famous contestants include Celine Dion, ABBA and Julio Iglesias.
