Melanie Doane arrives at Call the Office tonight with a new recording on a new label to go with all the screen time she has logged recently.
The Juno-winning Doane is re- teamed with Los Angeles producer Rick Neigher on her new recording, You Are What You Love (Actorboy/Warner). "You look at what a person really cares about in their life and you'll have a pretty good idea of who you're dealing with," the Canadian singer-songwriter says of the title .
The first single is Still Desire You. "It's a love song but I can't do it syrupy . . . I have to do it with back-handed compliments," Doane says.
You Are What You Love marks the debut release for Actorboy Records, the new indie label created by actors Gary Sinise and Ted Dykstra. Sinise became a huge Doane fan while filming a number of movies in Canada. He joined forces with Dykstra, who helped create the Canadian stage hit Two Pianos, Four Hands.
Critics say the Nova Scotia singer and multi-instrumentalist is making the most of the Actorboy opportunity.
Sun Media reviewers call You Are What You Love a consummate pop-rock offering, with Doane coming up with catchy novelty numbers (Wilma or a Betty Man, Bionic, the title cut) and pretty, heartfelt ballads (As I Am, Way Past Blue, First Love), all slickly polished to a glossy techno-pop sheen by longtime collaborator Neigher.
It puts her back in the CanCon limelight, where her previous recording had been a live affair. Doane had started out with a flourish. After releasing her album Adam's Rib, Doane received a 1999 best new solo artist Juno, relished the success of four top 40 singles and earned a gold record.
Meanwhile, Doane's screen debut in a recent Canadian indie production, the comic murder mystery Black Swan, has also been praised by critics. She plays the central character of Helen, a young, single mother desperate to fly away from the Bay of Fundy community where the film is set and find a life for herself in the big city.
Helen is certain that her small-town, small-minded boyfriend is a killer. In her bid to escape, she flirts with one tourist -- played by Dykstra -- she hopes will take her away to the big city.
She is also lending her voice to RoboRoach, Teletoon's animated series about a cockroach with superhuman powers. Doane voices Melody, a talented singer who brings the house down when she performs a song on Sacrificial Ham, a series episode that sends up the real-life American Idol. Now in its third season, RoboRoach relates the adventures of Rube, a cockroach who can turn into a heroic bug with amazing morphing powers.
Opening for Doane at the downtown London club is young London-based rocker Amanda Bolton. Formerly with Igneous, Bolton's career has included stops at New York, Nashville and Los Angeles.
