Original Kids' musical based on classic Victor Hugo novel

NOEL GALLAGHER, Free Press Arts & Entertainment Reporter   2003-06-03 04:30:22

THE PLAY: Les Miserables: School Edition, by Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg and Herbert Kretzmer; from the novel by Victor Hugo; presented by Original Kids Theatre and the London Public Library; directed by Jim Schaefer; music director: Mary Poole; featuring Daniel Colwell, Chris Mamo, Stacey Zegers, Elizabeth Rose, Sean Errey, Richie Filek, Nicole McMahon

THE PLOT: Escaped convict Jean Valjean in 19th-century France. Valjean tries to bury his past and establishes a new identity as a successful businessman, town mayor and father of an orphan girl. His freedom, however, is threatened by the relentless pursuit of the police inspector Javert.

QUOTE: "Three stories collide in this epic musical: unrequited love, a failed revolution and a chase to the death between good and evil. As the morality tale unfolds against a historical background, we move from retribution to redemption and finish with novelist Victor Hugo's promise that 'To love another person is to see the face of God.'" -- director Jim Schaefer
