Parents worry about protecting their children from bullies, diseases and strangers. But the biggest risk is at home, says a London safety group. London Safe Communities will drive the message appropriately home over the next few weeks in a campaign called Safe Adventures Start at Home.
Jan Tomlinson, chairperson of the group's child safety committee, says injuries are the leading cause of death and disability among children.
The No. 1 cause is falling, followed by choking, scalding, suffocating and poisoning.
"It's so scary. We think of the home as the safe haven," Tomlinson says.
She says most injuries are not caused by deliberate actions.
But she adds, "We try to avoid the word accident because it implies it's not preventable or it's fate."
The committee is gearing up its campaign because with school out for the summer, children will spend more time at home.
The launch today includes activities for caregivers and children at the London West Ontario Early Years Centre, on safety everywhere from the bathroom to the kitchen.
The committee will be running advertisements, putting up posters and distributing free colouring books and information in London and Middlesex County during the campaign.
Colouring books and other information are also available by calling 661-4800.
