TORONTO -- The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Belleville Bulls centre Jason Spezza is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday January 27 after scoring five goals and five assists for 10 points in three games.
Spezza, the second overall pick by the Ottawa Senators in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, opened the week with a seven point effort (three goals, four assists) to help the Bulls to a 9-2 win over the Sarnia Sting on January 25.
Spezza's seven point night was one shy of the Bulls' team record for a single game shared by Dan Quinn (1983), Jason Lafreniere (1985) and Brad Gratton (1987). The league record for most points in a game is 11 by Mike Kaszycki, who scored two goals and nine assists for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in 1976.
Spezza added a goal and an assist in a 4-2 loss to the Plymouth Whalers on January 26 and concluded the three-game road trip with a goal in a 3-1 loss to the Windsor Spitfires January 27.
Spezza, who has scored seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in seven games with the Bulls, improved his season totals to 26 goals and 38 assists for 64 points in 34 games. He is currently eighth among all OHL scorers.
