Toronto - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Erik Reitz of the
Barrie Colts is the winner of the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL's most
outstanding defenceman for the 2001-02 season.
Reitz, a 19-year-old native of Detroit, Michigan, scored 13 goals and 27
assists for 40 points in 61 games. The Colts' captain was named to the OHL's
first all-star team and participated in the Hershey Cup CHL All-Star Series
in January. He was named the Eastern Conference's Best Body Checker, Best
Penalty-Killer and Best Defensive Defenceman in the annual OHL Coaches Poll.
The Max Kaminsky Trophy is awarded each year to the Most Outstanding
Defenceman as selected by OHL general managers. Teams were not permitted to
vote for their own nominee. Players received five points for a first place
vote, three points for a second place vote and one point for a third place
vote.
Reitz received 78 points in the voting, while runner-up Mark Popovic of the
Toronto St. Michael's Majors received 31 points and Kevin Dallman of the
Guelph Storm, was third with 27 points.
Previous winners of the Max Kaminsky Trophy include Denis Potvin (Ottawa
1971-72 and 1972-73), Al MacInnis (Kitchener 1982-83), Chris Pronger
(Peterborough 1992-93) and Bryan Berard (Detroit 1994-95 and 1995-96).
