One of the elder statesmen of the Canadian short track speed skating programme, Jonathan Guilmette comes to Turin hoping to defend the gold medal he won as part of the men's 5000m relay team in Salt Lake City -- he also won a silver in the 500m at those Games.

During the 2003-04 season, Guilmette was ranked as Canada's top men's short track skater. His 13 medals on the World Cup circuit that season, coupled with his silver in the 1500m at the 2004 World Championships are evidence of his once-dominating form. Unfortunately, a serious back injury suffered at that event has hampered his progress ever since. In fact, he has moved away from most of the individual races, choosing to now compete mostly in the 1500m and the relay. The injury was the third major setback of his career. He also hurt his back in 2001 and broke his femur just three days before the 1999 World Championships.

Although some may argue he has lost a step, Guilmette's amazing resilience is a source of pride for him individually and for the relay team as a whole. Betting against a Canadian podium finish in this particular race would not be advisable.

As someone who enjoys cooking immensely, Guilmette will consider opening a vegan restaurant when his career winds down.
